Golden sun, clouded chariot Carry my heart over the waves It's been many long years since I've seen my home Away, my love, away Many long years in the dark sea foam My love, away Hungry ears, lonesome monument Fly my colors in the squall I heard a bell on the Fiddler's Green Away, my love, away A fearsome sound where I've never seen My love, away Great white bird, weary wanderer Cast my sorrows to the deep I have no tears for to salt the earth Away, my love, away No tears to weigh what my life was worth My love, away

I think you thought I was in love with you But I just missed you like a brother, Like a bellyache, a bruise And a wiser friend once told me Sometimes boys are rubber bands And they come back to you I hope you'll be coming back, too This house is really someone else's house And though I've lived here for a while, It still isn't quite my home Quiet nights, I hear the harbor Sea lion barks and buoy bells And I feel far away I wonder how long I'll stay Ooh And still I think someone will sing for me I know I'm sensitive and silly, But I'm tender and I'm true I can close my eyes and listen With a hopeful, humble heart, A simple song to sing Waiting at the end of my string I learn my lessons from the trees and sky And though I never do my homework, I am present in the class It's not hard to learn their language But it's hard to speak it well It takes a long, long time It takes a long, long time It takes a long, long time It takes a long, long time

If you come to me hungry, I will hold out a plate If you come to me thirsty, I will fill up a glass If you come to me weary, I will lay out a bed If you come to me weeping, I will open my arms If you come to me If you come to me If you come to me I'll be here if you come to me If you come to me hungry, I will hold out a plate If you come to me thirsty, I will fill up a glass If you come to me weary, I will lay out a bed If you come to me weeping, I will open my arms If you come to me If you come to me If you come to me I'll be here if you come to me If you come to me hungry, I will hold out a plate If you come to me thirsty, I will fill up a glass If you come to me weary, I will lay out a bed If you come to me weeping, I will open my arms If you come to me If you come to me If you come to me I'll be here if you come to me

I wonder how you're doing, But I don't wonder very much I wish you all the best, But with a light and gentle touch And I don't want you to come back, But I want you to be well Oh my heaven, oh my hell You've begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a used-to-be Begun to be away from me Begun to reel me out to sea Begun to be a memory for me Sometimes I get swept up in All the things we used to do I know they weren't all good, But I liked doing them with you And I hope that you are better 'Cause I for one am not the same Oh my glory, oh my shame You've begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a used-to-be Begun to be away from me Begun to reel me out to sea Begun to be a memory for me And I can say I'm grateful To recall our golden days And I can say I'm grateful, too, That we have parted ways I think about you just a bit More often than I'd like The curtain call is done, But there's still props and set to strike And I'm finding ways to leave you, Though I left you long ago Oh my wonder, oh my woe You've begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a used-to-be Begun to be away from me Begun to reel me out to sea Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory Begun to be a memory for me

about

Carry My Heart Over the Waves is a quarantine album: I recorded it in bedrooms, featured the harmony of my family, and played all the instruments. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 were all written in this strange time, and the other two are shanties about travel and distance that felt wistfully appropriate.

I'm grateful to be able to share this endeavor with you. I hope you find something in it that you didn't expect, but recognize.
